Overview Key Stage 3, 4 & 5

Secondary School

Our Pride ISM Secondary school consists of three key stages namely Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 for the students aged between 12 to 18 years old.

Key Stage 3

Our key stage 3, also known as Cambridge Lower Secondary, applies to pupils aged 12 – 14 in school years 7, 8 and 9. At this stage, areas of learning are organised as subjects and taught by subject specialists. With the shift of focus from having child-centred approach in primary into more enquiry-based, problem-centred and decision-making approaches.

Our pupils need opportunities to develop whole curriculum skills and capabilities in greater depth. Our teachers making the teaching and assessment plans to assess those skills and require co-ordination between a range of subjects. We also plan how pupil’s experiences of key stage 3 will relate back to key stage 2 and prepare them for key stage 4.

In this stage, we will also emphasise the development of

  • Cross-curricular skills such as application of mathematics, ICT and communication;
  • Thinking skills;
  • Personal capabilities for lifelong learning; and
  • Effective contribution to society

Key Stage 4

Key stage 4 applies to pupils age 14 – 16 in school years 10 and 11 and pupils will follow courses and work towards qualification such as IGCSE (International General Certificate in Secondary Education). There will be some change of pupils’ experience in this stage and focus will be with the curriculum that is learner-centred, broad & balanced, coherent, continuity and progression, skilled-focus and relevant.

Our Key stage 4 curriculum meets the diverse need of individual pupil’s needs, interest and aspiration. It takes into consideration of future learning and / or career pathways as well as individual ability. During Key stage 4, we empower pupils to become increasingly independent learners and prepare them for everyday life and lifelong learning. We foster attitudes and dispositions to support personal development, global citizenship and employability.

Key Stage 5 (or) Sixth Form

For students who are around the age of 16 to 18, after their IGCSE, we prepare them to sit for their International Advanced Level examinations. That particular stage is called Key stage 5 or sixth form. In this stage, pupils go through more intense and challenging courses in very specific subjects which are used to consider for their future studies or career path. Pupils that have demonstrated, at Key stage 4, that they have the potential for further study (min grade C or better in 5 or more subjects). The subjects learnt at this stage are important foundation in selecting Higher Education courses and other alternatives with a clear focus on employability.
